Esther- BRAVE

Esther, born Hadassah, is the eponymous heroine of the Book of Esther. Esther was a Jews queen of the Persian King Ahasuerus. Ahasuerus was identified with Xerxes I.IMG_6893

In Persian the name of Esther mean, “STAR”, which refers to the planet Venus.

The story of Esther takes place in the Persian Empire when Ahasuerus (XerxesI) was the ruler. Esther was from the tribe of Benjamin, her families were among the Jews who chose not to return to the trek back to Judah.

The King is upset that his Queen, Vashti refused to come when called so he removed her. He met a beautiful Jewish girl name
Hadassah, she received praise from all who met her. So the King selected her to become his Queen and made her name Esther.

Mordecai, Esther’s cousin, convinced her not to reveal her Jewish identity, because Jews were still looked at as suspicious people. So she kept the secret to herself. At that time a plot was set to kill the King so Mordeca
i informed Esther so she could warn the King. The identities of the men were revealed and they were hanged.

Now enter Haman, who was second in command of the Persian Empire behind the King, was not only evil but also arrogant. Haman expected everyone to bow to him but Mordecai would not, this angered Haman.

He wanted the Jews dealt with and Mordecai warned Esther. Mordecai stated to Esther she must let the King know, but Esther feared for her own safety, but she wouldn’t allow risked her life for her people. At a banquet E
sther revealed the plot to kill her and the Jewish people and name Haman, the king was upset and full of anger, he had to walk out of the area to regain his poise. When he returned he requested Haman be hanged for his plot.

Esther story is incredible. Here is a woman who was willing to risk her own life to save her people knowing she would possibly be killed. She put others needs ahead of her own. She was truly BRAVE. The main aspect to remember was trying to protect your true identity from others only hurt. But accepting your TRUE self is not only BRAVE but that the TRUTH shall set you free and you are FREE indeed.

Book of Lamentations

First the word has a meaning of expression of passion or grief.

Lamentations begin “How lonely sits the city”, Jeremiah was walking through the streets and back alleys of Jerusalem and saw nothing but suffering and pain. The IMG_6792book looks at how a person (Jeremiah) is unsure how there is so much suffering, death, and children begging but in the midst of this this was the judgment of God upon the city of Jerusalem but faith always appeared: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentation 3: 22-24

I think of this even in the midst of darkness you must be able to see light (which is hard) and know the suffering will not last. Like myself I was in hope of being in my new city and then darkness felt on me, I became homeless and lost hope and wanted to return back home but that would be easy, so I looked for the light.
But I kept my FAITH– believed in HOPE, knew God LOVE me, and VICTORY would be mine.

“ The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Lamentations 3:25-26

Song of Solomon- Poetry

Is poetry of the longing of a bride to be with her future husband. She is reference to their time together feeling him touch her and the first night of their marriage.

IMG_6596On the wedding night the husband praises and partake of his wife and she offers herself to him.   There seemed to be problems in the relationship but in the end they reunite and are secure of a lasting relationship with true love.

With all relationships- there is the excitement in the beginning- fear and impatience- but with work and both parties understanding the others feelings it comes together.

Samson- One more Time

The story begin in Judges 13th and conclude with 16th chapter. During this time the Philistines lived on the west side of Anaan, which is near the seacoast of the Mediterranean. They were also the number one enemy of Israel during this time and also out numbered the Israelites. There was a man name Manoah from the tribe of Dan whose wife was unable to have a child.

The angel informed her she would soon become pregnant and provided instructions on what she couldn’t do. The angel informed her don’t drink wine, or any alcoholic drink, nor eat forbidden food. The son was to be a Nazirite – (which is a person who took a vow to be set apart for God’s service) and also informed her his hair must NEVER be cut.img_6198

The woman went back to tell her husband all that the angel had told her. The angel spoke to Manoah and informed him his wife must follow all his instructions including other items.

When the son was born he was named Samson, the Lord was with him. A Philistine woman caught Samson’s eye and he told his father he wanted to marry her and asked him to get her. His parents did not approve but was unaware that the Lord was at work. The marriage was unblessed and his wife was soon taken from him by her father and given to a companion. Samson was angry and took out revenge on the Philistines. The Philistines felt Samson’s punishment and took out their own revenge by burning her and her father. Samson fell in love with Delilah. What Samson didn’t know is that the Philistines went to Delilah to entice Samson to find out what makes him strong.

Delilah tried everything but she knew Samson was not telling her the truth about his strength. Until after all her nagging he told her “My hair had never been cut, and he was dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth.”

Delilah got Samson to fall sleep and his hair was shaved and the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. The Philistine brought Samson into the temple to entertain them and Samson hair was growing back. With his anger of what had happen still he was thinking about revenge again for himself. Samson, prayed to the Lord “Sovereign Lord, remember me again..please strengthen me just one more time.”

As Samson stood between two center pillars and pushed against them with both hands, he prayed. “Let me die with the Philistines.” At that moment the entire temple crashed down on the Philistine rulers and all the people in the temple. At that moment Samson killed more people when he died than his entire lifetime.

Lesson Learned

Samson was to be a Nazirite, set apart to God from birth. God give him strength to fight Israel’s enemy instead he used it for his own revenge and he gave into temptation and was a womanizer full of sin. But God will use even a sinful man to enact his will

What’s so sad of this is Samson understood the true source of his strength but he never knew his true purpose. That is the truth in our life; there are many people given ability with such great talent but never truly knowing their purpose or destiny.

The main lesson is if we keep walking into temptations, will lead to sin and we will suffer the consequences for our disobedience. Our God will use a sinful individual to enact his will.

Malachi – Minor Prophet

The book was written to correct the lax religious and social behavior of the Israelites. The people of Israel questioned God’s love for them. Malachi questioned the people of respecting God the way God deserves to be respected.

IMG_6038.jpgIsrael has failed each time but on every time God has always called his people back. God speaks again over judgment for the sin of his people and their inability to believe and love him.

We all struggle to follow God; the challenge is to never give up even when things don’t go our way because God has yet to begun.

Zechariah-Minor Prophet

Zechariah saw signs from the future and one was the coming of the Messiah. He made references to not only the first but second comings. Zechariah spoke of Christ’s life events: entering Jerusalem, being betrayed, and being pierced.

img_5689There were individuals still returning from exile who needed encouragement of forgiveness knowing their nation would be judged but also knowing they would be cleansed and restored by God, who always rebuild his people.

We all face discouragement in life and fear facing the outcome but knowing we have a God that will always be there to lift us up and lead us back on the right path.
